The Photo-Section of the Library, established in 1966, has since developed as a repository of visual records of modern Indian history.
Over the years, many photographs of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and his eminent contemporaries as well as of important events associated with the nationalist movement have been acquired mainly through gifts from individuals such as Smt Indira Gandhi who gifted the Nehru Collection, Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Shri K. R. Narayanan, Mohammad Yunus, Sucheta Kripalani, Nayantara Sahgal, P. N Sharma, Pyarelal, H. P. Mody, Bhimsen Sachar, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, D. G. Tendulkar and institutions such as Press Information Bureau (PIB) and Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust (IGMT).
