For preserving and protecting the rare and original papers and documents acquired from prominent persons and institutions, the NMML established a Microfilm Section within the Library, in 1968 primarily to save them as records now and for the future. Accessibility of information contained in original, fragile, old or valuable resource material such as newspapers, rare books or old magazines is enhanced if preserved as microfilms.
Currently, the Library holds a rich collection of approximately 18,500 microfilm rolls and 51,322 microfiche plates of newspapers, journals, dissertations, private papers, institutional papers and rare publications which are widely consulted by research scholars. Some rare and important documents in this category are Amrita Bazar Patrika (Calcutta), 1905-1996; Civil and Military Gazette (Lahore), 1877-1963; Bengal Times (Dacca), 1876-1908; Hickey's Bengal Gazette (Calcutta), 1780-1782; Times (London), 1785-1996; Census of India, 1872-1931 and Madras Mail (Madras), 1868-1981.
