The Centre for Contemporary Studies was set up as an advanced studies unit of NMML in 1990 and is housed in the Annexe building. Created with the purpose of streamlining research activities and providing an atmosphere conducive for research, the Centre is responsible for overlooking all research projects of NMML. It was established for the promotion of research on modern Indian and contemporary history with a special emphasis on the life and ideas of Jawaharlal Nehru and the freedom movement. It offers research fellowships to scholars engaged in advanced research on themes related to modern Indian history and contemporary studies. The three research areas in which fellowships are granted are ‘Promotion of Research in Modern Indian History and Contemporary Studies’, ‘Perspectives in Indian Development’ (Social, Economic and Cultural) and ‘India and Changing Trends in World Economy and Polity’.
The Centre offers fellowships at the level of Senior Fellow, Fellow and Junior Fellow to scholars in any one of these three ongoing areas. Currently, the Centre is overseeing 19 research fellows who are working on a diverse range of subjects related to modern Indian history. Affiliation is also available to scholars who have been awarded fellowships by other organizations like the University Grants Commission (UGC), Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and the Ford Foundation.
